Recently, Dabbs Fitness launched its new concept- Semi Private Personal Training.
In recent years, the group classes trend has taken over the fitness industry, and for good reason. Barry’s boot camp is perhaps a prime example. Classes are fun, social, and intense. It seems training in a group makes the classes more competitive and motivating for many people. It is also of course more economic in comparison to personal training.
However, speaking as a coach, there are some limitations with group classes, which perhaps not everybody realises. These days, especially in London, most of us are sitting down working all the time. From GCSE’s, to University, to work in the city, and this rather sedated lifestyle tends to lend itself to postural and movement issues. Most people reading this will have suffered stiff neck/shoulders, or lower back pain (two of the more common symptoms). These movement limitations are quite easily fixed in most cases through a combination of movement, strengthening, and mobility work. However, these are often specific to the individual, and there’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach, which is why a good coach, or physio is required.
For a good robust athlete, an intense circuit class will definitely produce a great metabolic effect, as movement quality will be good, and every exercise will be effective. However, in my experience, the devil is in the detail, and most people can’t squat adequately, or even plank while properly engaging their core, which is why having a good PT will actually make sense, from a longer-term perspective. Even if you can have 4 group classes for every 1PT session, just completing 1 squat correctly, is more powerful than completing 100 squats incorrectly.
At Dabbs Fitness we have come up with a perfect solution to this- Semi Private Personal Training. The classes will be small enough (a maximum of one coach to four clients) for technique and movement quality to be achieved, and every client will be on their own specific program, working to their targets. Due to the group nature, the classes will still be competitive, and social, and will also be more affordable. Effectively it’s a great way to have access to some fantastic coaching.
Over time you will get stronger, fitter, and far less injury prone, which will also allow you to get far more out of HIIT classes, and metabolic classes which you may want to join in the future. Even better, you will learn how to warm up and mobilise, cool down, and use correct form for exercises such as the deadlift, squat, bench press, etc.
